The Republic Tigers And What Is Indie? Beer? Religion?

by theshark

The other day while walking down Christopher St in the West Village, The Bark and I were having a conversation echoing almost word for word what The Republic Tigers are discussing above – just what is indie today? Sadly, we could not come up with an all-encompassing answer, partly because it’s a question in the vein of “what is the meaning of life,” and also partly because this ridiculously smoking hot chick walking a Pomeranian walked by and our feral male instincts took over. (Don’t worry, we checked, it was really a chick. But you never can tell on Christopher Street)

So I pose the question to you to consider today, just who or what should be considered indie? Is Radiohead really “indie” now? How about Nine Inch Nails? Madonna? Can any of these super-rich former major label darlings justifiably call themselves indie? Or did making their first billion disqualify them from any and all talk of being considered “indie?”

And furthermore, since indie is such an all-encompassing, murky adjective, can other things in life be indie too? Like religion, for instance. The Bark and I were joking that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam were the majors, so stuff like Buddhism, Mormonism, and The Church Of The Flying Spaghetti Monster are the hip, indie religions. How about booze? Bud, Coors, Miller, Heineken, Guinness, and Michelob are the majors, while microbrews and most imports are the indies. I only drink indie beer, by the way, because I’m a fucking pretentious drunk. The possibilities are endless. What other things in life are indie? I’m interested in hearing what you come up with.
