!!! have had several lineup changed over the years. It felt like members dropped off like flies for a while, but the band is still going strong. As one of the pioneers of the dance-rock hybrid revival, the band have spawned several offshoots and have a vast array of peers.
Free Blood
Ex-!!!er John Pugh’s project with Madeline Davy stays very true to their roots. They certainly focus more on the “dance” side of the dance-rock equation, and keep things pretty funky with karaoke-esque performances.
Out Hud
When members started dropping out of !!!, the buzz quickly shifted to up-and-coming side project Out Hud. With members already seeming to come and go, rumors abounded that Out Hud would cause !!!’s break up. However, around 2006, Out Hud were the first to go (though side projects of the side project have already sprung up).
LCD Soundsystem
Tyler Pope of !!! played bass in James Murphy’s band, LCD Soundsystem. Though let’s set the record straight: For all intents and purposes, LCD Soundsystem IS James Murphy. Still, it’s not a far jump for fans of !!! to get into Murphy’s danceable sounds.
Les Savy Fav
I wanted to pick a band on this list that hits upon !!!’s rock side (it has been too dance-oriented thus far). Considering the bands’ Gang of Four influence, I was initially going to make comparisons between !!! and Radio 4. However, Radio 4 have quietly slipped into the night, with only a few scattered songs and a handful of live shows. So picking another Brooklyn dance-rock act. If Les Savy Fav decide to slip into the night, it certainly won’t be quietly.
