Afro-Punk and Independence

by Emily Youssef

We know you’re weighing some big decisions: Hamburgers or hot dogs? Fireworks from Shawn’s house or Vanessa’s rooftop? How early is too early to start drinking? (Don’t pretend like you don’t need a nap after a few on a hot day).

If you’re in New York, you’re also probably factoring the Afro-Punk festival into your Fourth of July weekend. Living Colour, Janelle Monae, Saul Williams, Game Rebellion, Joya Bravo, Earl Greyhound and Whole Wheat Bread are just a few of the musicians taking the stage in Brooklyn this weekend.

The music, film, skate and art festival, now in its fifth year, hosts an array of free events at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the surrounding area. Co-founded by Matthew Morgan and James Spooner, the fest initially grew from the 2003 film, Afro-Punk, highlighting multi-cultural kids in the punk rock scene and their exploration of identity.

From skate clinics and BMX competitions (with some pretty sweet prizes) to documentary films and an all-day Spike Lee tribute (July 5th), there’s plenty to see. And should your social schedule be booked this weekend, the film program runs into early next week, plus there’s a block party going down Sunday July 12.

In true spirit of the fest, Earl Greyhound are inspired by and inspire those who do their own thing.
