Pixtape: Best New Downloads

by Emily

Best new downloads from the month of June all in one place, guilt-free.

1. Cassettes Won’t Listen “Animal Ox”
A mash up of Animal Collective and Cannibal Ox. That’s all you need to know.
Download album via XLR8R

2. Creepoid “Stranger”
Mysterious, murky and lo-fi, this Philly duo is like The Velvet Underground with a vaguely southern bent.
Download track via What I Heard Today

3. El-P “Meanstreak (In 3 Parts)”
From his all-instrumental Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixx3, you’ll hear some familiar El-P threads, but it’s worth a spin while he’s (probably) behind the boards working on a full-length.
Download track via XLR8R

4. Keep Shelly in Athens “Fokionos Negri Street”
Chill summertime track for crusing through town with the windows rolled down just as the sun’s setting. It’s downtempo without being too muzak retail-store about it.
Download track via Pitchfork

5. Japandroids “Younger Us”
Aw, nostalgia about being a wee bit younger, going out drinking and raising hell with an emo twist.
Download track via Fuck Yeah Go Team

6. Prince Paul Presents Horror City
This is an unreleased full-length the hip-hop producer (De La Soul, Gravediggaz, Handsome Boy Modeling School) recorded in 1995. Some of it turned into his later album A Prince Among Thieves, but the man says he likes the original better.
Download album via the Smoking Section

7. Lucky Me’s Sonar 2010 mixtape
If you missed Sonar earlier this month in Barcelona and won’t make it to their U.S. counterpart in Chicago in September, there’s this mixtape from a label who had one of the busiest nights there.
Download track via This is Lucky Me

8. Cloud Nothings “Even if it Worked Out”
Yes, this Ohio band qualifies as lo-fi (a la Wavves, who they’re currently touring with) but this song from their new 7″ is poppy and melodic more than distorted.
Download track via Each Note Secure

9. Unouomedude “Island Summer”
We’ll give this Jacksonville, Florida resident credit for his name alone, but this song from his debut EP Marsh is a whole mix of things we’re curious to hear more of.
Download track via What I Heard Today

10. Dave Tompkins “Bonus Beach”
If you have extremely patient and/or stoner friends who are music fiends, take Dave Tompkins’ vocoder remix for a twirl. It’s meant to accompany his new book, “How to Wreck a Nice Beach,” but is an interesting mix on its own.
