elBulli’s Silver Screen Debut

by Won Kim

The culinary world came to a standstill when famed restaurant/science lab elBulli closed its doors last summer. Head chef and former co-owner Ferran Adriá can be considered the godfather of “molecular gastronomy,” which in my opinion is a super bloated title to explain a technique of applying scientific methods and equipment to food.

Chef Adriá is simply a genius for serving anything from dust that tastes like fried chicken to a combination of gels that may taste the way a forest smells.

Unfortunately for us normal folk, we may never get to taste or experience such delicacies. Instead, we will have to opt for the elBulli documentary, which is currently touring theaters across the U.S.

This is basically going to be the best food porno you’ll ever see in your life. Having an all-access pass into the most exclusive kitchen in the world and getting to witness the stoic staff prepare food you’ll never get to eat will make your cucumber or sea urchin explode.

There really is no one who can break down food and think like chef Adriá: Whether you’re into the molecular gastronomy movement or not, this documentary will shed light on food and its preparation. Check out the video, go see the documentary and experience what true brilliance is.

Eat to the Beat: “The Simpsons” Roast Foodies

by Won Kim

The celebrity food world has truly hit its pinnacle when a whole episode of “The Simpsons” is dedicated to parodying foodies and chefs. Luckily for the audience, the likes of Tony Bourdain, Mario Batali and even Tom Colicchio all made cameos poking fun at the industry and themselves.

From degenerates in the back hustling up 50 ticket orders for a laughable wage to what is now equivalent to super stardom, this episode made me realize how far the industry has come. Granted, the aforementioned names are all credible and reputable veterans, but it sucks to know that chefs are now household names in what used to be sort of a secret society of taste makers and people in the “industry.”

It becomes less and less intriguing when my fuckhead of a neighbor who never gave a shit about the restaurant industry is asking me if I’ve read “Kitchen Confidential.”

“The Simpsons” did an awesome job ripping on the foodies. These are the pussies who don’t want to work in the kitchen, but take all the credit in pretending they know food. I’m sure that chip on their shoulder is some kind of chip that you can only find in the Amazon woods that needs to be heated to an exact 423 Kelvin–with the tears of little white children cooked in a banana leaf.

Guess what? It’s already been done. Way before you.

by Emily Youssef

Girl in a Coma have released Exits & All the Rest (Blackheart Records), their fourth full-length since their 2007 debut, Back Before I’m Gone. Check their new video for the single “Smart” over at Rolling Stone.

The San Antonio band launched a national tour playing select dates with The Coathangers and Fences. Check their website for stops.

The trio also told us what it’s like to be on Blackheart Records, founded by Joan Jett (that’s Miss Jett to you).
